01-08-1986 EMS Speed Post (1986)-Started
It was introduced on 1 August 1986, where letters, documents and parcels are delivered within a given time frame falling which full refund of postage is made to the customer.
The scheme of speed post has been provided under Indian Post Office Rules, 1933, framed in exercide of the powers conferred by the Indian Post Office Act, 1898. By amendment to these two statutory rules in 1986. Rule 66B was introduced w.e.f0.1.08.1968, which pertain to speed post.
Speed post Services were introduced in 1986, linking 7 Metro Cities, with a view to provide fast and time bound delivery services.
Nov, 1990 BNPL, Book Now Pay Later

1991 Multipurpose counter machines with computers were introduced in post offices in 1991 to improve customer service and increase staff productivity.

1993-95 India Post Logo - 1 designed by R.K.Joshi, IIT Bombay. Launched on 9/10/95
1996 Business Development Directorate set up in 1996, designs, monitors, develops and market value added, premium products of the Department.
1996-98 Meghddot Software (Early Stage)
Meghdoot software is designed and maintained by Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology, PTC, Mysore. It is designed to work in Microsoft Windows network with SQL Server as the RDBMS. The first version of Meghdoot was released in the year 1998 with the roll out of Meghdoot Point of Sale and later on all the other modules were added.
A Speed Post article is booked, processed and delivered through departmental software Meghdoot (For postel operations).
01-01-1997 Business Post
The Department launched Business Post with effect from 1 January, 1997 in order to meet the spefific needs of bulk customers. It provides value addition to all traditional services offered by the Post in the form of collection, insertion, addressing, sealing franking, etc. Departmental instructions stipulated that postage for the mail items as well as the charges for the Business Post activities should be realized from the customers in advance.
1998 Meghddot Software (1st Version) Launched
The first version of Meghdoot was released in the year 1998 with the roll out of Meghdoot Point of Sale and later on all the other modules were added.
1998 EMS Cooperative within the framework of UPU to promote the marmonization and development of Postal service worldwide.
1998-99 India joined the EMS Co-operative formed by UPU.
05-03-2001 The Department of Posts, in partnership with Ministry of External Affairs, launched Speed Post Passport Service on 5th March 2001.
01-2002 Speednet launched across 120 national speed post centres. A track & trace facility of articles booked thorugh speed post.
2004-05 The Business Development Directorate was re-organized into Business Development and marketing Directorate in the year 2004-05
2005 The Zone wise Letter added. The second letter indicator in the EMS label to indicate the state /cone of booking introduced.
2005-06 Under the tenth Plan, 855 Speed Post Offices have been provided with computers till 2005-06.
18-07-2005 In order to provide quality service and to increase revenue, the Department of Posts launched pickup of mail facility by postman

01-08-2006 One India, One Rate (Domestic Tariff): 20th Anniversary of Speed PostAs a part of 20th anniversary of intruction of Speed Post during this year, Department of Posts has launched a new scheme 'One India, One Rate' Speed Post. The new scheme is effective from 21st August 2006.
New slab of upto 50gms was intriduced at 25/- (incl. service tax and cess) - composite rate.
01-01-2007 As on 1st January, 2007the number of National Speed Post Centres has been increased to 186.
11-06-2007 The Local Speed Post rates made competitive by reducing from 20/- to 12/-(incl. service tax)
2007-08 BDMD. This Directorate was further reorganized in the year 2007-08 by setting up a separate division for Mail Business Development and Opeartions.
04-2008 Department of Posts (DoP) introduced 'Project Arrow' Scheme in April 2008 to transform India Post into a vibrant and responsive organization.
24-09-2008 India Post Logo: New Logo- Bi- coloured launched
04-2010 Further, as per Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), delivery of Aadhar Cards through Speed Post on concessional rate is also being done by DoP.
01-10-2012 Local Speed Post @ Rs.15/- (revised on 01.10.02021)
Local Speed Post rate has been revised to Rs.15/-+ Service Tax

11-2012 The IT Modernization Project of Department of Posts was approved by Government of India as a Mission Mode e-governace Project. The project aims at transforming the Department of Posts' operational efficiency and improving services delivery of operational and administrative units through upgraded technology and connectivity.
31-12-2013 Software Updation in SPEEDNET 4.1
At present, whenever an update is released for Speednet, the System Administrator has to go round all the offices under his control and to update software manually. Now this process is automated. The software at the local office gets updated automatically whenever CEPT release s update.
25-01-2017 Speed Post Passport Service-Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK)
In a unique partnerhsip, Department of Posts and MEA have come together to provide convenience in getting passports. Applicants need to buy the Passport application form avaialble with the Speed Post Centre, fill it and submit it along with the fee. Speed Post centres will check the forms, send them to the designated Passport Office for further processing and issue of Passport. The Service is avaialble only for issue of new passports and not for the renewal of passports.
The Pilot started on 25.1.2017 at Metagalli Post Office, Mysuru, Karnataka and Dahod head Post Office, Gujarat.
412 POPSKs have been opened upto March, 2019.
